Artists selected: Venetian clouds, shimmering threads and Abraham's sausage kettle
Ideas fluttered into the ‘bewegter wind’ clubhouse from all over the world for the competition theme ‘...fresh’. Shimmering thread installations from Japan, new images of women from Nigeria, a performance from Hungary, mantarayas from Mexico, thematising the environment and climate, social approaches and so much more. 156 applications were received from 22 countries and entered into the database by members of the association.
An ideas competition needs some preparation to present all the artists' ideas to the selection panel in a visual way. Designs on the changing power of the wind and new perspectives were presented. The jury was made up of experienced professionals from art-land-culture projects: Corinna Köbele is the initiator of the artists' town of Kalbe ( https://kuenstlerstadt-kalbe.de/) Together with fellow campaigners and lots of art, she has brought about changes in her town that attract attention. Teresa Weißert is an artist, art historian and is responsible for transformation through art in the countryside at Kompost-Ensemble (https://kompost-ensemble.de). Reta Reinl is an artist and curator of bewegter-wind.
After two days of intensive dialogue about the submitted works, the three jurors made a selection from objects, installations, videos and performances. The selected exhibits will illuminate the theme of “...fresh” from many perspectives at the wind art exhibition:
Regina Carmona from Brazil invites visitors to an installation called “Small Fresh Bed”, which emphasises the regenerative power of nature. Matthias Block from Frankfurt calls for a new perception of political processes with his “'Afforestation”'. In her video ‘Confused’, Estella Garcia from Spain deals with the tension between fear and longing. Giorgio Gerardi from Venice focusses on the constant transformation and renewal of clouds and the evolution of reality.
Dorothea Kirsch from the Eifel offers a very special illustration of metamorphoses with her installation “In Abraham's Sausage Vessel”.With her colourful installation ‘Intervention invading network’, Berlin-based artist Irene Anton highlights the importance of networks.
With ‘Whispers of Freedom’, Zahra Mohebbi wants to draw attention to the situation in Iran and erect a monument to the oppressed women there.
Marketa Varadiova takes the island of Laputa from Jonathan Swift's ‘Gulliver's Travels’ as a symbol of future prospects. She is building a four-layered protective island for insects. A microcosm that lives on its own.
Some artists translate the ‘fresh breeze’ with the movement of water. Mexican artist Lorena Malo transforms the shape of the manta rays into wind objects made from recycled fabrics. With ‘Music of the Weather Cycle’, the artist group ‘The impossible Trio’ presents a wind-powered record player and thematises AI interpretations in a second work. Ole Prietz and Emanuel Ott-Despoix deal with social and environmental aspects as a result of climate change in their works ‘Windmill Community’ and ‘Windmill of Dystopia“.
Sound installations and a vocal performance by Ralf Peters also interpret the theme.
A small foretaste of the variety of works that will be shown in August. There are still only sketches, but the art ideas will become reality in time for the exhibition. On the website www.bewegter-wind.de, each participating artist will have their own page on the works presented and with links to their complete oeuvre.
